There is a misconception underlining the entire discussion here. The 'fact' that large companies run camps which pay less than small companies is not necessarily the case at all. The camp (Brinkman) I was in last year had a killer planter average ($290 a day, that's including rookies and a handful ...

The reasons for not giving RWA dont seem to make sense either. It still doesn't explain why RWA isnt given out in Alberta but often is in BC. Probably 1/2 of the planters at the BC company I was at last year were university students . Despite that, the employer didn't seem to have any concerns doin...

Well Brinkman does manage to avoid the Owner/Planter separation in BC at least. All of Dirks kids are planters/supervisors themselves.

As for the tent, I've had the same Canadian tire tent $50 for 7 seasons and still going strong. My advice about buying a cheap tent is buy a good tarp. ^This. I've had a giant cheapo 5 person tent for seasons now. With a good tarp setup and a tent site in a wind protected area (forest), you should ...

Don't buy work boots period. They simply aren't meant to be to be traveled in that much in one day, let alone an entire season. Get a good pair of mountainnering boots or backpacking hikers. I definitely didn't post this as a direct comparison, just as a thought to get some conversation going. So how does treeplanting compare to other outdoor/resource related jobs? What does an average treeplanter make? That's a good question. Most likely much lower than $200 considering the number of O...

Treeplanter earnings compared to Canadian averages
Lets do a little simple math. Say you average $250 a day. If you are doing shifts of 4-1, that's 22-24 earning days a month. That would work out to about $5750 a month. http://www40.statcan.gc.ca/l01/cst01/famil21a-eng.htm The average earning for an unattached individuals is $29,800, that works out ...

I find that 4 liter 'milk-jug-style' are awesome. You can buy them filled with water at many grocery stores. I have planted in a similar style of Dakota boots for the last three seasons (the 400 model) and have found them to be very comfortable. Re: Wilderness Reforestation Ltd.
I actually worked my first two seasons in a unionized camp for Brinkman in Ontario. Part of the union deal was that we had reduced camp cost (10$ as opposed to the 24$ brinkman ontario standard) and the logging company footed part of the bill. This of course is by far an exception, but I just wanted...

If you want to plant for free, just go work for Brinkman. That's a good start. I had no problem making 250-350 a day in Alberta last summer. There were a few gong-show contracts in BC from what I heard, but many of my friends were also on well priced cream for months at a time. What exactly are you...
