Re: A Recovery in the Works?
Yes but it doesn't affect planting for two years after the logging.

Re: The WSWS Network Plan
How bout Western Silculturalist Society as in WSS or: " hey man, I just talked to this guy at WSS and he said we're gonna win that lawsuit." WIS, or WIZ sounds a hell of a lot better than MEC ( prefer just the co-op) or other acronyms. I'll spread the word though Facebook, BTW about this o...

Re: Brinkman planter dies in quad accident
I was on that contract-all this info is correct but I don't know anymore details beyond that it was over pretty quick.
Ontario safety is sketchy for sure.
Very sad to see Alan go-I was having a beer with him the night before around the campfire.

Re: Alberta planting, why bother?
I've planted in Ontario, Alberta and BC. There are bad contracts in all regions and good ones in all regions (well not Wash -hah). When I plant in Alberta (usually in July and rare these days) I stop planting 18 cent trees and plant 12 cents trees. It's that simple. You have to slut em in basically....

What about good fishing in or near camp? I've been seriously misdirected in my choices of work based on this parametre.

Re: South Island/Port Alberni planting bid results
One important point about these coastal shows on the island: A lot of the smaller players hire locals and thus have fewer costs associated with accomodation and travel. They can afford to pay more.

Re: The Race to the Bottom (2009)
Great post! Keep in mind that some companies band together on bids-I know this sounds sketchy, but it happens. Another thing-the bid price per tree is what the company gets, the price you get is a percentage of this and varies from company to company depending on their overhead and how many greedy h...

Re: Why You Should Wear A Seatbelt
Good thread Scooter. BrinkMart had four fatalities last year. Believe me you don't want to wake up in the morning to find out the guy who was having a beer next to you a few nights before is now dead. As I said in the other thread: Drivers, don't move the truck until everyone is buckled up. Peer pre...

Re: what is the possibility of getting July work
July work is very, very lean this year. I know where there might be work and I'm not saying-Sorry but I've been doing this for 12 years and need the money.
Good luck though.
Don't be too dewy-eyed about the culture though, your first season can be rough.
cheers

Re: Brinkman and Associates
I've worked for the BrinkMart for a long time. A few good contracts in BC (2 or 3 maybe), stay away from Ontario at all costs, you get paid on time, prices are lowish, supervisors overworked, lots of crews from Ontario have taken over in BC (eeeeK!). Coastal is all low-bid bottom feeding except for ...

Re: Planter killed in MVA
I have a rule when I'm a designated driver or a crew-boss: Everybody wears their seatbelt or the truck doesn't move.
It's really simple and works.
Lots of fatalities last year in the industry-three people that I knew so my thoughts go out to those friends...
