Re: BC Budget: 40 % cut to Ministry of Forest and Range
I'll just add two really minor points into here. Duncan said that: Quebec gets far more Federal money per capita than any other province, last time I heard, guess that's an argument for not giving out handouts anymore, other than that I do not know enough about Quebec debt to comment Actually they d...

Re: Mechanised tree planting
What is a disadvantage? Machines tend to lay-in "L" roots as the machine is always moving forward steadily. I don't think "L" roots are a serious problem, unless a tap-root gets broken or an overly uptight inspector calls them on a plot. I dont want to speak for every Canadian p...

Re: Blue Collar Silviculture
anyone else have any info about these guys? Well what specific info do you want? I think Richianity has a pretty accurate overall take of Blue Collar. If you're capable of 'going with the flow' and are looking for summer camp for college kids, you'll have a good time though. Personally I would say ...

Re: First Aid courses
Yes OFA 3 is 2 weeks long and the transportation endorsement is included. It should not cost much more between 700-800 dollars. Contact WCB (or google it) to find providers. Often colleges have the courses as well. Level 1 is a day and 100 bucks- its nice to have and a requirement for any job in the...

Re: Should Planters Wear Hardhats?
Here a antedote gleaned from facebook. Note that I am not the person narrating the story nor do I know the narrator. Since it was posted on a public group on facebook I am assuming that the author will not mind me quoting him in full: Adam Parlette: I only planted one year in Ontario and Im switchin...

Re: alternative job suggestions?
The deadline for Ministry Fire crews has passed but that's a good option for next season. They like to hire treeplanters- it 20 bucks an hour and you paid for overtime so if its a busy season you can make good money apparently. Private crews have to pay at least 15 an hour though they don't have any...

Re: How to reduce camp costs??
Quote: It would be better if the government just legislated that room and board would have to be provided by the treeplanting companies. Who would it be better for? As pointed out above, it would favor the "lower 50%" or the planters who are less than average. Couldn't you make the same a...

Re: How to reduce camp costs??
It's important to remember that the camp cost system doesn't occur in other bush jobs. People are generally appalled when you tell them that you as a treeplanter have to pay for your room and board. And when companies in other aspects of forestry, oilngas, trucking, CN Rail put their employees in a ...

At the risk of continuing to go off topic I havegot to respond to some of the stuff being posted Communism lost the debate 20 years ago. Not that I like pure Capitalism. I like it a hell of a lot more than pure Communism though. To quote Winston Churchill "Democracy {capitalism} is the worst sy...

Re: Open bundles and bagging up properly
I was skepical when I was told to put my trees straight up and down instead of packing then in sideways at the start of this season. But I didn't notice a major difference is finding and a getting out a tree- if anything I found it way easy and the trees certianly suffered less damage. So I continue...

100 million seedlings is about 50 million fewer then I thought it would be. Pretty savage contraction. Treeplanting will defintly be a back-up of my back-up plan next- if the prices going to get lower then what's the point?

Re: Low-balling, the only way to get work?
I mostly agree with Richianity assessment of treeplanting and capitalism. And to wade in here with a value judgement I would agrue that this is a bad thing. The declining wages in the treeplanting industry highlight the effect of the ruinious competition that is inherent in the race to the bottom. C...

Re: Dewan Enterprises
Dewan are hit and miss at best. They have the odd good job but are more likely to grab work at low prices and subcontract it to someone desperate enough to take it. I have only heard horror stories about contracts that were subcontracted from Dewan or anyone else. If you hear a job is suncontracted...

Hmmm I'm probably one of the targets in Richianity's posts since I got a B.A. Honours in History with a minor in English Literature and I'm planning to return to school for a History M.A. after I finish being a silviculture drifter. Pretty sure they're one of the East Indian companies. Hire all Indian crews, plant blocks in gigantic line plants and pay day rates at far less than what a regular planting company pays. Well the owner is East Indian but the pictures I've seen from their season on facebook shows that they hire most...

Yah I'm working for them now. They don't do any planting just various types of weed control. They are based in Peachland and they do some forestry herbicide application for Weyerhauser in the Okanagan area which is paid on a day rate basis and works out pretty well. Their main work is industrial veg...

Re: GETTING FIRED FROM TREEPLANTING QUESTION
Screefhead- good call- I'm almost positive that this occured in a Blue Collar camp where I was working. The three management figures (while generally hardworking) were very inexperienced compared to any other company I have worked at. Almost an ON redux where a person with 2 years of planting experi...

I haven't heard of many coastel spring camps- mostly motel's shows and/or barges. Though I did hear a rumor somewhere that one of Brinkman crews liked to camp- dont know if they had a cook though.

Withholding money is illegal BC unless you are in co-op where you have a signed and written agreement. Otherwise you have to get paid twice a month.

Re: Should I plant for A&Y in NFLD or Heritage in Ontario
I've planted with two planters who went through Heritage as rookies and second year vets. Its a smallish company (15-20 planters I think) that works in the Ottawa Valley- even get to plant some oak. I don't know much else but I sure that they have standard On prices- between 8 or 9 cents. They have ...
