Re: A&M Reforestation Question

Several years later, and after 3 more seasons planting out West... I had to reference this thread for a Labour Law class where we've been told to recount a situation in which we (or somebody else) experienced an employer do something stupidly illegal. A few notes, from a long way away: 1) My underst...

Re: Fukushima

First off, totally agree with what newforest has said above... the culture of silence, shame and deference is definitely a hindrance to investigating how bad the reactor leak actually is. Having said that, the IAEA is a pretty robust regulatory agency that seems to have this shit pretty dialed. It i...

Re: Tent buying

Just perusing the tent posts recently as I've been trying to sell one. The above post is bang on. Setup means a hell of a lot more than the brand of tent you buy. That said, I can't tell you the number of "awesome" Canadian Tire tents I've seen totally mangled by the weather, or simply jus...

Tent and Thermarest for sale

Hi friends, I'm moving (far) and unfortunately have to part with my second home- my trusty tent and bed. The tent is a TARN 3 by MEC, a "3 man" tent that will host you and your gear very comfortably. Super reliable, can (and has) withstand the biblical rainfall that only the planting life ...

Re: thoughts on deet-free/all natural bug repellants?

Honestly, it's a crock of shit. Doesn't work, and probably makes you smell like a pic-a-nic basket for them bear folk. I got sucked into the hippy-dippy pseudoscience of 'essential oils' (eucalyptus oils, citronella) for a bit on a particularly buggy block. It sucked; let me make that mistake for yo...

Re: Looking for a good BC company with a shorter season

Try Spectrum! And you will probably regret it. There is a lot of good companies with short season. Spectrum s strength lies in the non-planting, non-brushing area, where the offer good day rates wages. This is fair. That said, he's worked for Summit and A&M... been there. Spectrum's season is a...

Pink is easily the most visible, but for that reason is used almost exclusively for management. Blue it is!

^Regarding the supervisor Brandon... he's a dick. And not in a productive/motivational way, either. I won't be working for Spectrum next year; the quality of the company definitely deteriorated even relative to last year's season. If you can, work somewhere else. That said, a lot of very decent peop...

Everything about this sounds way better than A&M in Ontario. If you have to work in "Onterrible", this sounds like a pretty solid place.

Re: Spectrum Resource Group

I think the above reviews are unnecessarily negative- with some caveats. Yes, the prices are pretty shit. 10.5-13 tops. I found the food was good (wouldn't rave about it, but not bad.) As to getting screwed, I watched my numbers like a fucking hawk after my first year in Ontario, where I got totally...

It sounds like the people you worked around were very professional and that Folklore is set up well as an honest organization that respects its workers. Major kudos. For those with experience: Do you think that Raven would be an appropriate Spring gig for somebody who has worked 2 years in faster, easier land in Central BC? Re: Celtic Crew Boss hiring for 2013 season

This sounds sketchy as hell. By no means am I a grizzled vet, but I've worked around and I've never heard of this. I would be wary (and totally uncomfortable) of letting my employer decide how much I have "really" earned each day. To say that there's a base price, but not name it just seem...

That is Epic. Epitomizes everybody I have met who says "Oh, How hard could it REALLY be?" hahaha.

And those bright eyed ones who come in expecting farmers fields and fountains of money. "I'm an outdoorsy person!"
Unfortunately, I was that idiot last year!

Re: Importance of Sharpening Your Shovel

I think an important consideration to make here is that sharpening the blade can result in some nasty accidents. We had a guy this spring who (okay, this guy was an idiot) sharpened his shovel to the point of it basically becoming a blade... and of course he lacerated his hand, resulting in a hospit...

Total wages: $1100 in Cash advances. Final cheque for sixty dollars. I also gave them the infamous $100 deposit. So grand total for (conservatively) 41 days of at least 9-5 labour works out to be $1,060. This is after all deductions and taxes. As to our work hours, this fluctuated a LOT. There were ...

A&M Reforestation Question

Hey guys. Planted this past year with A&M, (Spring 2011) as a rookie. Long story made short, I think I got screwed by these guys. I don't think I was a terrible planter, nor was I a highballer. In my crew, I was definitely in the middle of the pack. In July, I got a cheque for sixty bucks (I als...
