Re: Workwizer E-Handle

The guy from workwizer ended up having an extra somewhere and I bought a spare from a planter I met, so all good! According to Shane workwizer might start producing them again.

Re: Apex Reforestation

Well the West Fraser contract was..interesting to say the least. Ether it was hyped up too much by everyone, or it had changed drastically from previous years. First half was a 11-12c grass mat with a required screef and obstacle planting on a certain side of the obstacle (east, west, etc). Not much...

Workwizer E-Handle

Hey people, I am looking for a Workwizer E-handle, the red one that fits onto a fiberglass shaft. I am willing to pay a pretty penny for it too. If you have any leads, send me an email at crit.happens@hotmail.com. and name your price.

Re: Apex Reforestation

The real gravy is the West Fraser contract out of Cache Creek/Kamloops and the Dunkley contract out of Quesnel. Also the Conifex contract can be pretty nice, haven't worked that in a few years though. Dunkley is a money machine if you dig their type of land. Those road rehabs are money on a plate. ...

D'lanos Family Restaurant in Prince George. 1515 Victoria Street, right across the Connaught. All around amazing breakfast place. Fresh pies of many kind every day. This is seriously a gem in a place like PG.

Re: Top Story: Pains and Gains: Calgary Herald

Seems like the numbers they throw around are rather sensational. The 300 figure could be right if they exclude companies like Apex and all first year planters. Otherwise it seems the recent articles with the emphasis on hiring students along with some sensational earning #s may as well been planted...

I'm on Mark's crew. For the first shift we just had hills and rocks. After that it got better as every one adapted to the specs and everything. After a while we did get into some nice, relatively flat stuff, but most of our pieces looked like the picture or worse. And yea, a lot of people had proble...

That's some pretty serious injury there. I agree that a significant part of the injuries seems to happen during the loading/unloading. As for the chains, the company I work for has welded bolts of the ramps, and drilled holes in the tailgate. Once the bolts are in the holes, you don't need a nut or...

I'm guessing you worked for Apex and you might have been on that FFT Mackenzie job in July. That looked pretty scary. The FFT Mackenzie work for IFS looks far better this year. Ah yes, the 1.3 million tree "burn block". This was one of the best sections: http://i.imgur.com/A6iLgb1.jpg?1 I...

What is a wind day? This one time we left an hour early because the wind rose and started blowing over poplars that had been left on the block. Other than that I've never heard of a wind day.

Thats good to hear, since I work for one of those companies. If they are looking for better bargains in the later contracts, it gives me a lot of hope for next season. Especially after a season of almost no road access.

Any thoughts as to why some of these companies consistently high balling by a large margin? Did they just get enough direct awards or waiting for something else to show up?

I cant really judge from the picture, but how big are these things? I was looking at the smallest one, the 6x6, and I'm having doubts about it fitting in the box truck for transport. How would you get these things to the block?

Holy hannah Pebbles! What time are you leaving 'residence' in the morning? That is a long day and not nearly enough sleep to be functioning throughout an entire season. I think I had two days this season when planters were not back at camp 12 hours after they left, and I consider it a big problem w...

Re: Informal Survey: How much sleep do you think planters g

I've averaged my sleep this season to be about 6-6.5h per night. For a while we were having very long drives, 2h one way, so we were in residence by 8-9pm. Cooking food took about 45 minutes so I was usually in bed by 11-11:30 for a 5am wake up. In bushcamp I was probably getting around 7 hours, may...

tell your son to quit planting. he'll never make money. he'll make horrible life choices. start doing drugs and probably become an alcoholic. plus he'll get repetitive strain injury, either from planting or having to listen to you. Finally some one tells it like it is. Before planting I was a 4.0 G...

Re: Buying Gear in Prince George

Our camp has pretty much switched from IRL to buying exclusively from those guys. In anticipation of the season our 18 pack has already placed orders on bags/tape/gloves. I find that besides a more convenient location than IRL, the tape CS sells is easier to tear and does not stretch like IRL stuff ...

Re: Planting clothes for warm to hot days

Haha in my rookie year the bugs were atrocious. It got so bad for me that I went to army surplus and bought a balaclava. A very thin one, just enough to keep the bugs off my face and also allow me to breathe properly and not over heat. Worked like a charm, havent used it since though.

Re: Planting clothes for warm to hot days

My favourite combo for hot days is wool socks, long johns, gators, shorts, and a plain white dress shirt with long sleeves. If its not too buggy and slashy I roll up the sleeves or just wear a regular t-shirt.

Im not trying to paint Apex as an end all and be all of planting companies. Before making this post I've browsed a bunch of threads on other companies and yes, a lot of the smaller companies who hire largely vets pay more and do not have many of the problems companies like Apex has. Its only logical...

Re: Apex Reforestation

Hey Mike, I know a few people who currently work for Apex, so I will try and answer some of your questions. In previous year, the vet bonus used to be $25 a day, which covered camp cost. However (starting last year), they changed the vet bonus to 15% added to each tree. So it is not $25 plus 15%. T...
