Re: 2024 Public Bid Results

No wrapper trees: We did four trials over the last five years with different clients: -The trees came in layers with cardboard dividers in the boxes. -Anytime a box tipped over (all the time), the trees turned into a rat’s nest of dirt and seedlings pointing in whatever direction. -Quad blocks were ...

Re: 2022 Public Bid Results

Cyper, that's a good point. Based on your list of "winners" it looks like Mosaic did a good job at selecting their contractors. This list appears to suggest that perhaps some were not the lowest bidders? I used the word "shady." I can see how this would "ruffle some feathers...

Re: 2022 Public Bid Results

In regards to the prices on Vancouver Island: it’s unfair to solely blame the contractors. Most are doing the best they can to INCREASE the prices on the Coast. We must also look at some licensees’ shady tendering practices. For example, for the spring 2022 planting season Mosaic broke up their plan...

Re: 2022 Public Bid Results

Scooter, thank you for your "State of the Industry" article. Very good. If I may add two cents: I believe there is one more reason why planter prices need to improve for the 2022 planting season: Since we know that 2023 will be a record breaking year we will need to attract (and retain) mo...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

Goodness is it Christmas already? Perhaps we can start a communal Christmas list. I can start: Dear Santa, for this joyous, festive Christmas season: I wish that everyone returns home safely after all the viewings are done. I wish to find that the Island contractors have bid wisely on coastal work a...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

“Let's hope they figure out how to transfer that effectively to the coast this time.“ If “they” (well, every contractor bidding on the Coast for that matter) start submitting fatter bids then they’ll have better chances to improve! It’s hard to improve when one is constantly bound by a bone dry budg...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

Haha. Well said. Although I shouldn’t laugh cuz it’s not funny. But what you say is true. Yup map packages are frequently late or with some errors. Big rush to get everything viewed and get the bids done in time. Hopefully win a couple contracts. Sit and wait all winter. Hurry up and wait for snow t...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

In order to keep our crews safe by avoiding going into town on days off I’ve thinking about buying portable washers and driers. Ideally, they would come with their own tanks for the reusable water. One could fabricate a hamster wheel and have a couple planters run to operate them. And then after a c...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

Just to be clear I'm not talking about colluding. I'm talking about opening up another discussion. No contractor can be "proud" of their bids on the Coast knowing that they're paying themselves just enough to cover costs, maybe make a couple bucks and most importantly pay the planters just...

Re: 2021 Public Bid Results

I would like to comment on the BCTS Campbell River contract (and all bidding practices on the Coast for that matter): 63 cents per tree is a terrible price for the BCTS CR contract. The fall portion of the contract is 795,000 trees on very challenging old growth planting: steep to very steep blocks ...

Re: 2020 Public Bid Results

“In fact, if people are going to put themselves out there, they better be prepared to take some ribbing, some shots (yours were really just subtle, and honestly not entirely pointless), and some scrutiny.“ Some might say that this could be considered workplace bullying, humiliation and harassment. H...
