Re: ADHD and Planting?

I have ADHD too, and planting is the only job I've done for multiple years because it just works for me. I never use any prescription drugs during the season, and just make sure I get enough sleep every night and lock myself into a decent routine, and I know people with ADHD generally do better with...

Re: Brinkman and Associates

I've just been offered a job with Brinkman in Alberta, near Whitecourt. The confirmed contracts are with Blue Ridge Lumber and Alberta Newsprint Company, does anyone have any experience/knowledge on this contract? Adam is the camp supervisor! Is this an offer I should take? I also received an offer...

Re: Rhino Reforestation

I worked with a guy who worked there for years. He told me he wished he knew how much better planting could be outside of Rhino, and that he shouldn't have wasted years of his life there. Sounds like a pretty shady company that treats labour laws as optional guidelines, and judging from the attitude...

Re: Heritage Reforestation Inc

Heard pay was quite the issue this year and a lot of people are upset. Any insider info? I worked for them a few years ago, and pay was an issue then too. I recall one German guy's pay was routed through another planter at the end of the season to bypass labour laws, and he never actually got his m...

Re: Keto diet and planting

Aren't keto diets designed to burn fats? I feel like you'd want a diet where you've got lots of easily accessible energy throughout the day. I always follow a pretty high carb diet when I'm planting, and I always run out of fat by the end of the season. But apparently some ultra runners are doing it...

Re: Planting at 3000 meters

Just curious, what state would you be planting in? And how many states do you work in a year? It seems like you cover a lot of ground every year.

Re: Drug Testing for Planters

I'd guess that maybe 60/70% of planters smoke recreationally. This is just based on people I met in camp and travelling, so it's totally anecdotal. I feel like alcohol has more serious long term effects than marijuana. After a night of drinking it takes me about two full days to reach my normal cogn...

Re: Planting in the USA

I'm an American, message me if you'd like my CV and phone number. :) No third paycheque fever here, especially if the prices in the U.S. really are as dismal as I've heard. I have way too much student loan debt shackling me down to be able to walk away from any job. Planted with this guy in Ontario...

Re: Off-Season Work and Work Outside of Canada

There's a guy on here called newforest who does American work. For Australia check out Timberwolf (?), they do a bunch of landscaping type tree planting down under.

Hi John

Illegal Worker Pay

I have a question regarding illegal labourers and how a company is responsible for renumerating someone they have knowingly employed illegally (who had no work visa). A friend of mine was working for a pretty shady company in Ontario without a visa. At the end of the season, they routed his pay to a...

Re: Is the BC Government Losing Control?

I think it's saying that the BC government has given up its discretionary power when it comes to the management of the provincial forests. Timber companies are the ones who are making the decisions about which areas of forest are to be logged and local communities have very little power to influence...

Re: Burning!

Thanks for the info. I might have the opportunity to go burning this coming fall. I might be taking a bit of a pay cut from working on a road crew, but setting slash piles on fire for a few hours a day seems a bit more fun than breathing in a bunch of asphalt dust for 13 hours a day.

Re: Burning!

How does pay work for burning? Is it a day-rate kind of thing? Hourly? What kind of money are we talking on a daily basis with an average burning season in October/November?
