Re: Rising Wages?
Really great post, I love these glimpses into the history of the business. I started planting trees in 2002, so much of that is before my time. Hearing these kinds of accounts often gives me some good context for how the industry got to be the way it is today. As far planters being paid more, and tr...

Re: Bella Coola and area
I was in Bella Coola two weeks ago, and I saw a couple references to the community forest’s planting program. One article I read talked about planting 40k trees in a season, and it sounded like they hired locals directly.

Certainly looks bad on paper, but would it play out that way in the field? I can’t speak for brinkman, but I know that Seth and Zanzibar have both done those contracts in the past. Re: 2021 Public Bid Results
So BCTS decided to direct-award the Haida Gwaii contract this year, to Stephan contracting. I’m pretty sure that is a first for them, and the decision stems from not wanting to have a contractor bring people on-island during these covid times, as well as reducing the political friction between BCTS ...

Hindsight is always 20-20 when it comes to bid results. I don't disagree that they could have bid higher, but I bet they need that job a lot more than their competitors. A small local company's season can be made or broken by winning or losing a job like that.

So anyways... what you all think it would take to get us, as an industry, to adopt a model where we are paid to live away from home? Is this even possible? I’m thinking JDT will say probably not, but maybe it could be in form of a tax credit? Or just an improvement to the existing RWA?

I’ve never used a saw smaller than the 460, but for light cutting in the 1” diameter range I would think just about any saw that you can put a circular blade on would work just fine. I usually don’t stray from the 550, just because it’s what I know and suits the jobs I do, but a lot of brushers seem...

Chances are good that spectrum is not being acquired for their silviculture operations, but for their other more profitable divisions. This is just an assumption on my part, but I suspect that the logic would be similar to carillion's takeover of Outland a few years back.

I hear a lot about how the MPB work isn't what it used to be, but it seems that there is some money being spent on fir and spruce beetle control from about Mackenzie down to Williams lake or so. Re: Hunting and Fishing in a Treeplanters Camp
I would stick to birds and fish if I were in a planting camp. Mostly because they are the easiest to catch and process, but also because they will attract less negative attention than a deer or rabbit hanging in camp. I figure as long as you're within the regulations you have every right to eat wild...

I like dogs, mostly, but I do not believe they should be be allowed on job sites or in working vehicles. As for the regular, or sinocast protectors, the range you gave is pretty typical for average production. That being said, once planters get enough experience with these things it's possible to put in a lot more.

Yes I have a fair bit of experience working with vexars. I've done them a few ways, using both bamboo and cedar stakes. I think that's the case, but I didn't follow it all that closely. I drive by that cut block every now and then, and it still looks like shit after all these years. At this point it would be nice if it was either planted or developed somehow instead of just being a bunch of slash piles by the highway
