Re: Stephen Harper just gave me 2000$
So EI is there just to keep the proletariat in it's place? Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. More realistically, EI is there to help people transition out of dead-end industries (auto manufacturing?) into something else. It's hard to see how the 'victims of society' fit into this with their 3 months...

Re: Stephen Harper just gave me 2000$
EI is garbage. Another reason why I am a future expat (or a future prime minister). The funny thing is, it was treeplanters that changed my mind on the nanny state. Prior to planting, I was all for social welfare because there were poor and oppressed people who were put down by evil white men...err ...

Re: Funding for "forest workers" doesnt include us!!
Great debate gentlemen. I mean reading other threads like 'what music do you listen to' or 'how many trees have you planted' is interesting and all, but this stuff is better than TV IMO. As for substance, I'd like to submit that one should never look to the government to solve their problems. The go...
I had somebody on my crew who worked 3 contacts and she's getting 225 a week - not really much to live on, My point being - Ei isn't always the answer.
Which is the whole point. People should have an incentive to work during the off season. If EI were luc...

Re: where not to work!
Hammy, you're just upset because I didn't back your dog...to be honest, I kinda thought I was winning this debate. My argument is that all treeplanters are ultimately replaceable. There are enough wide-eyed naive rooks out there to fill the vets shoes. In fact, I think the industry is designed for h...

Re: where not to work!
Sorry, that's exactly what I am telling you. All treeplanters are unskilled labour. No I am not arguing semantics. I think people are confusing 'piece work' with 'skill'. As I previously posted, I would have made a killing if I got paid per box stacked (the janitor would make a killing if they got p...

Re: where not to work!
Haugen, Well this debate is about whether or not planting is unskilled labour. As it turns out, you agree with me. DO you now care to debate the difference between skilled labour and professional jobs? You are right. The chump in the back room is an employee and therefore entitled to EI. They would ...

Re: where not to work!
I stumbled on this gem that I thought I'd share as well http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/unskilled+person& no technical training involved for planting. I don't see why everyone is so upset. You're all making great money. I mean 515/day is WAY MORE than my lawyer brother is making, WAY MORE...

Re: where not to work!
here's another definition that I find describes planting. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=unskilled+labor doctors, lawyers etc aren't labour jobs. They are professional jobs. They don't qualify for things like EI and are basically individual businesses. You can get good at an unskilled labo...
However, Anyone can be a plumber, carpenter or 'sparky' if you have a ticketed person with you.
Anyone can be a treeplanter. No 'ticketed treeplanter' required. Re: where not to work!
Jordan, you are correct and I should apologize. If planting works for one as a career, then power to that person. It's not my place/business to decide how people live their lives. I was just trying to point out that for the vast majority of people starting treeplanting, this will not end up a career...

Re: where not to work!
Honestly, I can't believe that we are having this debate. Treeplanting is unskilled labour. In skilled labour jobs you must train/apprentice to become X skilled worker. You can't just show up at a work site and become and electrician/plumber/carpenter etc. All of these jobs require apprenticeship/tr...

Re: where not to work!
I can't let this slide. Tea bagging the steep hill with 6 species requires some learned skill, but treeplanter's are still not skilled labour. Giving someone a shovel and bags makes them a treeplanter. Giving someone a hammer does not make them a carpenter. This, ultimately means that all treeplante...

Re: where not to work!
Well in my 5 years of experience in BC/Alberta (my 6th and likely final season lasted 1 day), the story has always been the same. The people who are the loudest in the 'treeplanters are oppressed' crowd tend to also be the ones with the least ability to realize that they are not worth very much in e...

Re: where not to work!
Yawn....This is the same story every year. The poor oppressed tree planters are once again being put down by the man. If only I could make $400 everyday and get a blowjob from the checker then my life would be complete! In my opinion, this is ultimately a good thing. People will eventually realise t...

new forum feed/forum --> treeplanters and taxes
Hey Scooter, I'm sure I missed it and its out there on the web/this site, but I was thinking it could be a good idea to have a section where people give some tax advice to the rest of us and maybe a link to the revenue canada section of their website for the appropriate form etc... just a thought du...
