Re: Gray areas...
Basically, if you keep working for low prices, you are partially responsible for said low prices in future work. By sticking it out, for whatever reason you choose to justify it, you make the business model of the contractor work out. I am sure that the contractor made their money, and will do the s...

Re: 2012 Public Bid Results
"Vote with your feat" ignores the complex social, economic, and psychological factors that very frequently result in planters not doing that. While I can agree it is somewhat true. I also think it's a cop-out. One could also say not quitting ignores social, economic and psychological fact...

Re: Khairi making news - another BCTS success story
Many times this past season I found myself slamming a bit (okay a lot), because if the client wanted 11cent trees, I'll be god damned if I planted him a 15 cent tree. Not to mention I'll be god damned if I worked my ass off for a measly $200. While I somewhat agree with your frustration, keep in mi...

Re: Khairi making news - another BCTS success story
The wheels of bureaucracy roll slowly, as we all know. At least this one is moving, seemingly in the right direction. Getting money out of these scumbags will be the next battle, let's hope that everything is done to ensure the workers are properly paid out. A message needs to go out to all the scam...

Re: Ask A Former Forest Tech
I happen to think a lot of planters should go out and do some checking. Then they'd know what a 6 or 7 looks like, instead of trying to argue that their 20% excess must not be true.

Looks pretty slow, but hell of a lot better screef than I want to ever do. I wouldn't doubt that the next generations of this type of machine will be computer controlled and a lot faster.
Let's see it try the steeps.

Looks like there are many more details of of this saga that are still coming out. This one is sad and I hope it gets looked in to carefully.

Re: When is a vet a vet?
When I have the confidence to put you in a chopper with another planter and 2400 trees, give you a map and some specs, and fly you in to some god-awful 2.3 hectare heli-log piece somewhere up an inlet. Then you are a vet to me. If you radio me a few times in the day and keep me posted on progress, a...

Re: Planting in the USA
For shovels, I have found that I like these the best... http://www.workwizer.ca/ The only beef I have is that they wear down quite fast. A season and a half is all it seems to last before the blade is worn down to the point where I want a new blade (which can be purchased separately). For the amount...

Re: Foreign Rookie Tree Planter
Without a work permit, I think it will be pretty much impossible to land a decent job. Anyone who would hire you, without a work permit, would be highly suspect. I would be very worried about even getting paid, and that's if you ever even get to put a tree in the ground.

Re: 2010 season...what r u willing to work 4?
Looks to me like NGR amended their original bid (by quite a bit), and was the lowest bidder. It is acceptable from what I have read in BCTS contracts to amend a bid as long as it is received before the closing of the bid.

Re: footwear
I have used Gore-Tex socks before and they worked quite well when I was cycling a lot in the rain. I have carried them around for years planting, but have only used them sparingly. I layer on the wool socks into my Vibergs and though the feet get wet on the bad days, they stay warm. It is pretty muc...

Re: viberg...yay or nay?
Well, after praising ONO, I have to say that I was not impressed with the phone conversation I just had with the Nanaimo store. I was calling to find out pricing on the 200-Woodsman boots that I wear and think are the best option (value-comfort) in caulk boots. The Nanaimo ONO told me that they do n...

Re: viberg...yay or nay?
Vibergs are the bomb. I don't like disagreeing with backcountrysister because she seems to usually makes the most sense of anyone. My experience is the Viberg outlet in Victoria doesn't undercut the prices of their retailers. I have found that ONO trading has the best deals on boots, gloves and almo...
