My camp has been running off a satellite internet system for about the past six or seven years. The dish and hardware was provided by a company in Prince George, but the actual service was provided by a company called InfoSat.
Apparently, InfoSat is shutting down their service on September 1st, in just a few weeks, and the dishes will not work anymore. The company has been taken over by a company from New Brunswick which also took over one competitor of InfoSat, and are replacing both systems with a newer technology.
The drawback is that prices will probably be higher with the new systems. In addition, all hardware will have to be replaced. The company was also saying that it will no longer be possible for end users to move and set up a dish, because a technician will need to visit the field to do the setup for us. The costs seem prohibitive and unattractive.
Does anyone know of any other competing systems out there which will still work in the future? I assume that several companies must be using the same technology, and thus a lot of companies that run internet in remote camps may be affected in the very near future.
