Applicants
See I am a veteran and a rookie to all of this.. I need a job I can't find a job where I currently live because I don't speak french. And Life costs to much money.
I am 20 and a veteran of the bush. I know what it takes to dish out the weather, terrain etc.
So my real question is. Do these companies hire like college students.. or do they hire like drifters hard working bums who need that $.? What about people who don't have there HighSchool diploma? Do these companies care for that or what?

I posted a comment earlier (in the thread about "large blocks") that the type of people that get hired as planters include:
Yes, there are a lot of university & college students who plant trees. No, this doesn't necessarily make them better or worse than people who have other real-life experiences.
No, you definitely don't need to have your high school diploma. The last thing that I'd look at, if I ever looked at a resume anymore, would be your scholastic achievements.hippies, vagabonds, bums, miscreants, bank robbers, pedophiles & buggerers, foreign nationals, salesmen specializing in religion, people looking to get away, people looking to return, drug users, alcoholics, perverts, and the odd university student.

Re: Applicants
I have worked in the bush for 18 years, and I'm thinking about getting out. I'm 31 with 2 kids and lady to take care of and I refuse to contribute the coruption any more. Get out while your young and learn to grow food. You could travel the country working on small farms and gain wisdom you couldn't find anywhere else. If things return to a more sustainable nature in the bush industry then you will have lots of work and all the food you need to get the energy to do the work
It's my second winter now not falling trees and I do miss it.

I wanted money for a dirt bike, so I started working to save up for one. Just so happened I was really quick to learn how to run saw and couldn't see a way to enjoy making money, and the pay was better than any job out there.

i'm just wondering where you got hired at that age. the russians i planted with for a few years, they logged the same blocks they planted later, and the kids often started as young as 13 with both jobs, driving skidders and planting trees. a nerdy 15 year old (3rd season) put in 3K next to me with a matik.

I worked for my dad.
Re: Applicants
good for you ekim. don't know you, but sounds like you got the goods. people that can work in the bush doing every thing and any thing are far better off than those that only plant trees. there is work year round if your good and know what your talking about. having a family and responsibilities puts things into perspective. there are a lot of veteran planters and foreman/supervisors that have done nothining but work for planting companies for the last 20 to 25 years. these people may be worse off than the rookies starting out. they are mostly on trick ponies that can make money planting trees. but thats it. if you spend too much time doing only one thing. it's the road to nuerosis. the 20+ year vets in the planting game are mostly wonder bread. they can last a long time, but have no substance. stay diverse. companies will need more employees with diverse forestry backgrounds. the more work you do, the better you can understand how things grow; like vegetables and stuff that you smoke. hope you find some work tippin trees over soon. stay safe. bushcuteyputey
