Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
Good job KKRF? Mike, you always struck me as someone that gave uniquely unbiased perspectives on these forums, so I'm a little surprised to see you stoked on a sub 35c bid that looks more fit to Williams Lake planting than the steep slopes and long runs Revy is known for. I get that people dig that KK is run by planters, but this isn't exactly something novel. This is how every planting company starts out. Bottom line here is that a bid price of <35c for Revelstoke is super low, period. Looking at the tight grouping between 45-50c a tree, I'd guess this job should have been paid out between 20-30c, depending on the ground. These prices are nearly impossible to attain with a 35c bid even when incorporating limited overhead. Best case scenario if they pay out 65% of the bid (which is extremely high, but maybe they could pull this off for a day or two without going into debt), your looking at 22.5c for the gnarliest shit this contract will have, as opposed to upwards of 30 from some of the competition. Moreover, one of the companies that was beat out, Fireweed, is a local company that would actually have had LESS overhead than KK by virtue of avoiding motel costs (unless I'm mistaken and KK are local). Not to mention the geographic advantage of already having lots of workers nearby that Zanzibar and likely Raven had would have certainly driven the portion of the bid price paid out to planters up from them.Mike wrote:Full bid listings Steve, if you have them?

I want to stress that I really do hope as a company they succeed, but I think its a little premature to be drinking the koolaid of a company that just beat out a whole slew of highly respected and established competitors that have history in the area (Zanzibar, Raven, Fireweed, Evergreen) by about 25% just because they've made some cool youtube videos.
Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
This is BCTS, like it or not. Had they not put in the bid, it would have gone to AKD. I am substantially more optimistic about KKRF's odds of doing a good job of it than AKD's.
It's good analysis, though, and you're right on basically all points. If AKD hadn't shot in such a low bid, and the sheet instead had KKRF just dropping 20grand on Fireweed to break into the industry, I'd be calling them out for shitty behaviour.

I don't have the info to confirm that as true, but if KKRF is undermining AKD in any way, that's probably something that benefits the industry.mmmm... not quite. It has been discussed on these forums before but Tiger, Dewan and AKD are all owned by the same people. They bid on the same contracts. Its called bid stacking and is not legal as far as I know. One bid sheet was posted here that showed AKD and Dewan 1-2 on a contract.

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
It's hard to say for sure, but I would not be surprised if AKD dropped that bid if KKRF didn't win it. It's highly unlikely they have other work nearby, so logistically it doesn't make much sense to accept such a low price on a reasonably small contract. Also, this is not KKRF's first job (re - breaking into the industry)... Although their previous work could have been subcontracted.
Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
Complicated issue, for sure, and I agree that I was probably glib to call this a straightfoward win for planters. Part of me is tempted to just scrounge up contact info for AKD and ask if they would have accepted it. What $ figure was the bid deposit on that contract?

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
They subcontracted a contract last year. They were not invited back despite an abundance of trees.dreamofcream wrote:It's hard to say for sure, but I would not be surprised if AKD dropped that bid if KKRF didn't win it. Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
I spoke to a couple acquaintances who aren't company loyalist types and went to this contract, working for KKRF for the first time, and they all said the money was super solid.

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
This BCTS Revelstoke contract was awarded to King Kong. Last week BCTS asked us if we were able to take it over as they were defaulting King Kong for lack of production. There were 80,000 trees left to do and KKRF only had 3 planters left.

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
What about the Timberline and Evergreen bids ? 62K left on the table to the next highest bidders...15% if you're keeping track. They must have seen something that the other bidders did not. Wow!!

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
Very large and ambiguous Heli component. All blocks are accessible at the moment, but who knows at the time of spring planting. Timberline bid no Heli and was disqualified for doing so. Evergreen probably shrewdly covered their ass in a risky scenario. In the case of a block with 25,000 trees, 512's at 108/box, then a quad/drive access block becomes a 243 box Heli show...19 turns at 5-10 minutes a turn.
The other companies bid in a lot of Heli is my guess. I'd be curious to know who took this in the end.

Re: 2015 Public Bid Results
That contract is based out of Port Alberni. And Evergreen officially accepted the BCTS CR job and all that money left on the table.
