2014 tree planting for Irving

Planting in the Maritimes is very different than planting in Ontario or on the West Coast. Learn why in this forum.

2014 tree planting for Irving

Post by bluejay »

Has Irving changed any of their planting methods?
We were told normal Irving employees cattle planted and worked at the pace of the slowest planter. It was cowbells while I worked there, but there was rumour of hardening the roots to make use of bags and bundles. They did have trays of trees that were nicknamed machine gun belts.

Tree prices?
Outland did some work for them I remember 7.5c each.

Scarification?
At times it was immaculate straight creamy furrows when I planted there a few years ago. Other times there was perfect scarification over 2 inch soil or 2 feet of branches.

Camp rules?
Camp site with no drinking, breakfast off site, and/or shared camps with the loggers with awesome meals still no drinking. If I'm going out planting I like to have a beer and a smoke after work.

Anything else?

7.5 cent land, cattle plants and no letting off some steam on a night off

Sounds really fun!!!

Planting on private land in NB was always about twice that rate. It was 12 cents 15 years ago and you lived at home.

But was it Irving that was doing it at that rate? I've got dozens of friends who have planted for Irving (some in my own camp this year) and they've always said prices were 7-8 cents.

Definitely not Irving. It was silviculture contractors working for woodlot owners via the marketing boards.

What does a tree-deliverer get paid by Irving?

I doubt there is any occupation other then the delivery truck driver that delivers the trees road side. The planting is roadside, you don't walk much further than 400 m from the road with bags loaded.
