Rookie interview questions..

Post by Catherine »

What to look for in a company/ ask at an interview or by email:

What percentage of the vets came back last season? This season?
What percentage of rookies came back last season? This season?
What percentage completed the season? Left?
What percentage left due to injury/ tendonitis?
How much did the rookie highballer make/ plant? The veteran?

Ask about:

 Food- who's cooking? how long have they been with the company? In the industry?
 Trucks/ vehicles- what kind and how old are they?
 Camp atmosphere drugs/alcohol, ex: few beers after work or kegs every night?
 Days off- How many days on, before a day off.
 Spring/Summer Break- is there one? when and how long is it?
 Estimated planting days- doesn't include days off
 Where will the company be planting and for who?
 How long will you plant there, how will you get to your next contract and how long will it take (ex: 8 hours driving, couple days off, etc)
 How many trees per contract
 Tree prices although you might not be able to relate to these. You can ask how much the prices have increased/ decreased since last year too.
 Foremen- years experience planting, years foremening?
 Camp supervisor- years in the industry, years supervising, years planting.
 Camp costs- like rent
 Benefits- For staying from the beginning til the end- camp reimbursments, etc?
 Union fees Other hidden fees?
 Helicopter blocks - how many how often?
 Extra work when the planting season is over?

add to this list...

Personally I would be looking for companies that have no reimbursements if you stay to the end because it shows that they have trouble keeping planters and need to implement such a system. A good company should have planters begging to stay and sucking every last day out of the contract.

uh... good point

well, still a good question then i guess

but a medium company that can own up to its mediocrity may not be too crappy for rookies because they would maybe be more inclined to teaching/trainning their rookies cuz they are in desperate need for quality trees or quality planters; also that rookies waste any good land/ good tree prices/contracts that are given to them in the first month anyway, the rookie's season with his mediocre contracts and company may just even itself out with the reimbursment he gets, and just end up being a typical rookie season, depending on the other factors of the season. but for sure not so good for vets that know what they are doing.

accommodations- tents or cabins or hotels?

camp perks- internet, satellite TV, etc.

equipment- any supplied? deals? some companies will get equipment at cost and sell it to planters to save them money.
