I'm going to leave this contract summary graphic at the top of this topic this year, and update it sporadically throughout the season as new results start coming in.

Hello.

I figured that I should get the forums prepped for another fall viewing season. I'll warn everyone now though, I'm still trying to catch up on an enormous backlog of work, and it will probably be a good two weeks before I start catching up on posting new bids here. Only a few bids have opened so far (Celtic & Brinkman winning two contracts that I'm aware of), but there are quite a few more jobs opening in the next two weeks. So please be patient if I appear to disappear and there's no info here until later this month.

Pitters asked:

Any word on if the 2022 bids will be released with dollar amounts as in previous years? It was missed last fall and COVID seems like a strange reason for the change (That was the reason given by BCTS no?)

I believe that BCTS is releasing results again this year. It makes sense, since we all knew all the numbers behind-the-scenes anyway. I think a few contract openings are being done in private, but I think that's just a common-sense precaution against Covid, as opposed to some sort of attempt at secrecy. But who knows? Time will tell.

At some point, I will release all of the 2021 numbers, so we have everything available for historical reference. But again, time is something that I just don't have enough of these days.

Scooter, thank you for your "State of the Industry" article. Very good. If I may add two cents: I believe there is one more reason why planter prices need to improve for the 2022 planting season: Since we know that 2023 will be a record breaking year we will need to attract (and retain) more planters to the industry for 2023. Nothing attracts (and retains) planters more than money. In order to succeed in 2023 we will need an even greater workforce than we've likely ever seen. To attract this workforce we'll need to "show them the money" in 2022. Tight planter prices in 2022 will likely not encourage an increase in newcomers to the industry and won't lock down returning planters for 2023. How much more money? I believe that the companies that pay their planters the most will have the greatest chances of success over the next couple years.

I just thought of a new convenience. I'm creating a summary of winning bidders for various contracts, and I'll keep that updated sporadically in the very first post in this topic. As of this moment, it only has the first ten contract awards, but I'm sure that I'll find more to add in the coming days.

I'll still continue to start posting more detailed results on all the bids throughout this topic. It may take me a few evenings to catch up so everything is current, as I'm working on a couple of other web projects right now too.

There have been a lot of fall brushing programs advertised on BC Bid. I think I'm caught up to date right now with all the planting contracts, so I'm also going to try to list a lot of the brushing contracts that have come online since July.

I'm not going to try to do any "price per hectare" comparisons, since brushing contracts can have such radically different specs. But the brushers here can look at the documents attached to each bid, and come up with their own analyses.

These last two bids are interesting. Typically, bid prices tend to rise gradually (as an overall trend, not consistent on an individual basis) as the bidding season progresses from September to December. Yet the last two contracts in Fort St James include the lowest bids on a per-tree basis that we've seen in three years.

Is this a trend that should concern the industry as a whole? No. Nature's Treasures was obviously quite desperate for work, in a season where volumes are going to drop by twenty million trees. But several other companies have already made a conscious decision to field smaller [and therefore more experienced] workforces to compensate for this temporary one-year drop in volume. Industry volumes will almost certainly recover in 2023 to the same levels as this past season, due to the extensive fires throughout BC this summer.

Nothing to worry about in the long term. Unless you're a potential rookie. There will be fewer job opportunities for inexperienced tree planters in 2022.

Here are the results for a contract for Planting in Revelstoke

Contract: PL23TKR001
Client: BCTS Revelstoke

Left on the Table: 82.2%

This is a notable contract because it's one of the largest dollar amounts left on the table in a few years, at $461k. However, I suspect that when you look at small number of bidders and the per tree prices, it may likely turn out that the two higher bidders on this job were just throwing out random safe bids, and weren't trying to put in competitive bids. We saw the same thing on one of the Williams Lake jobs two years ago. The bid price on the BCTS Revelstoke contract last year was only 61.8 cents, although there was also a FLNRO contract in Revelstoke last year that went for 79.0 cents. Either way, if this contract is similar to one of those, then it's a higher price per tree than last year.

As far as I'm aware, the next few contracts don't open for a bit, so I don't think we'll see much for additional results until the end of next week. But there are at least 11 more planting contracts for BCTS that open by the end of November.

Free to Grow is a subsidiary of Integrity Contracting they have incorporated, gone through a name change and a few structural changes in the last year but the same owners/partners control Seth's Integrity Contracting and Free to Grow Contracting.

The Revelstoke job this year is different than most other years, in that about 1/3 of the trees are barge access only across Kinbasket Lake. The only barges available are through Downie Timber. This summer contractors had to wait months to use their barge, as one was broken, and the other was being used by Downie itself. Evergreen is likely assuming they will have access to the barge; a gamble which may, or may not pay off. Either way, that's a lot of money left on the table...

I remember when the northern companies were low-balling the southern contracts 10-15 years ago, I guess it didn't work out too well for them since they didn't hang around. It looks like the opposite is happening now with Nature's Treasures going hard after so much work up north. Interesting times...

Although the condition of the Forest Service Road network in BC is the least of the province's concerns right now, BC ForestSafe just pointed out that people using resource roads need to be especially cautious right now.

Anyone who viewed a contract in parts of the southern half of the province before November 14th may find out that some access has been washed away. I suspect that plans for a few blocks may have to be revised eventually.
