A dense section of aspen before the girdlers got to it. Notice that the coniferous trees are hard to see.

Photo

The same piece of land, after the girdlers have gone through it. Notice how much more open it is.

An aspen being girdled with a proper girdling tool.

Photo

One of the putty knives that some of us use for girdling ... we sharpen the edges, then bend the blade over in a curve with a torch to make it more effective.

Photo

The bottom of a caulk boot, with two of the caulks just replaced and sharp. These boots are handy for walking over wet logs on the blocks.

Photo

Old caulks on the left, new caulks on the right, and a caulk wrench in the middle.

Andrea Menard, attacking an aspen.
